I am writing to let you know that I will be interviewed shortly on the World Wide Wave programme on JOY 94.9, Melbourne’s queer radio station, about my recently submitted thesis entitled ‘The Age of the Urning’. Details as follows:

THESIS TITLE: THE AGE OF THE URNING
My thesis used the correspondence of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs to build up a profile of his followers: the men who called themselves ‘urnings’. Between the years of 1864 and 1897, the lives of urning men were far from easy. Most lived in fear of blackmail and ruination. Even in the cities, where liberal tolerance may have prevailed, they were still vulnerable. They were not, however, passive victims buffeted by events. These were men who had taken control of their destinies. They owned an identity and social identification that defied society’s norms. Some of these men, the ones profiled in my  thesis, such as Jakob Rudolf Forster or Adolf Glaser or the autobiographers who wrote to Richard von Krafft-Ebing, took that a stage further and demonstrated agency in attempts to improve the lot of their fellow urnings. Far from being ‘docile bodies’ inscribed by the discourse of psychiatry, these men were self-identified and self-constructed urnings who were now a body of men ready to support the world’s first homosexual rights organisation.

The ‘interview’ will be part of a light internationally-focused programme called ‘World Wide Wave’ and will include music and other content alongside me as the guest on the show. It will therefore be accessible for all the non-historians among you. The program will air between 6pm and 7pm (Melbourne Time) on Tuesday 1 February.
